Few Retail Health Clinics Located In Low-Income Areas, Study Finds
Most retail health clinics are located in more affluent areas of the U.S., rather than in low-income, medically underserved neighborhoods, according to a study published on Monday in the Archives of Internal Medicine, the AP/Washington Times reports. For the study, researchers mapped 930 retail clinics operating in 2008 and used U.S. census data to evaluate the overall income and racial characteristics of the neighborhoods where clinics were located. In counties with at least one retail health clinic, researchers compared census areas with and without retail clinics. According to the study, 123 clinics were in communities classified by the federal government as medically underserved. Communities with clinics had lower percentages of black and Hispanic residents, lower poverty rates, higher homeownership rates and higher median incomes, according to the study.Ateev Mehrotra of the University of Pittsburgh said, "Many people have promoted retail clinics as a cure for access to care for the underserved," adding, "These findings show that"s unlikely to happen." Lead study author Craig Pollack of the University of Pennsylvania said the study"s results suggest financial incentives might be needed to bring clinics to low-income communities (Johnson, AP/Washington Times, 5/26).

Senate Finance Committee Holds Second Closed-Door Meeting On Health Care Reform; Details Of House Energy And Commerce Committee Overhaul Plan Leaked
The Senate Finance Committee and the House Energy and Commerce Committee on Thursday both worked on health care proposals aimed at overhauling the U.S. health care system, CQ Today reports. In its second of three closed-door meetings, the Finance Committee came to "early, broad agreement" on some issues but continued to disagree over a public option as part of a reform bill. Recent Releases: New Res On HIV Testing In The U.S. Available, Nationwide HIV Campaign Announced

The Kaiser Family Foundation, ahead of National HIV Testing Day on Saturday, has released new and updated informational res on HIV testing in the U.S., including a fact sheet that provides HIV testing statistics, policies and CDC recommendations. In addition, the Foundation released two survey briefs, which examine the public"s attitudes, experiences and knowledge related to HIV testing, one of which focuses on black residents. The briefs are based on the 2009 Survey of Americans on HIV/AIDS released this spring. Information regarding HIV testing by state also is available through statehealthfacts.org (Kaiser Family Foundation release, 6/24). Separately, the Kaiser Family Foundation in conjunction with the Black AIDS Media Partnership (BAMP) yesterday announced "Greater Than AIDS," a nationwide campaign that seeks to address HIV/AIDS in the black community. The Greater Than AIDS campaign - which is being developed and distributed by BAMP, a coalition of leading media companies - will reach the black community through public service announcements, integrated media content and community outreach. A number of media organizations are supporting the initiative.
