Novocell Obtains U.S. Patent For Drug Screening Human Embryonic Cell Derived-Endoderm Cells
Novocell, Inc., a stem cell engineering company, announced that it has received U.S. Patent No. 7,541,185 with method claims covering the use of endoderm cells derived from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) for drug discovery. This is the second U.S. patent issued to Novocell related to human endoderm. U.S. Patent No. 7,510,876, issued on March 31, 2009, is directed to an in vitro human endoderm composition.

Vertos Medical's Mild(R) Procedure Gets Nod From Leading Pain Medicine Physicians
Leading interventional pain physicians from key U.S. centers gathered at a special clinical symposium to share their experience with Vertos Medical"s mild (Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression), the least invasive surgical procedure for treating lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS), with no implants left behind.* Their early clinical experiences suggest that mild may be an appropriate treatment alternative earlier in the LSS progression, as mild patients have shown favorable results when comparing post-treatment improvement at three months to open surgical procedure patient results at one year1. Does Preoperative Biliary Drainage Influence The Outcome Of Resectional Surgery For Ampullary Carcinoma?

A research article published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology addresses this question. This is believed to be the first study to investigate the effect of PBD in ampullary cancer. A team of gastroenterologists led by Dr Steven Joseph Mesenas and hepatobiliary surgeons at Singapore General Hospital divided 82 patients with ampullary cancer planned for surgical resection into those with PBD (n = 35) and those without (n = 47). The authors looked into various outcomes after surgery, such as pancreatic leakage, wound infection, bile leakage, infectious morbidity, intra-abdominal or gastrointestinal bleeding, intra-abdominal abscess, delayed gastric emptying and mortality. They found that the PBD group had a significantly reduced wound infection rate compared to the non-PBD group.
